Circus leaving town

Disappointing news for Port Melbourne today as it was announced that Circus Oz, who quietly occupy the old Post Office and Naval Drills hall on Bay Street, would be relocated to larger premises in Collingwood as part of a $15m cash injection from the state budget.
It's good news of course for the circus themselves as they expand to keep pace with similarly irreverent international performers like Cirque Du Soleil. It's a shame though for the neighbourhood as we'll lose one of the few quirky presences remaining on Bay Street, to be replaced no doubt by another shiny set of apartments.

  1. Sad news. Given we don't value heritage much I think you'd be right about the building becoming apartments but it would be nice to think another community-minded use could be found for this building.
