Railway Club

The Railway Club Hotel is perhaps Port Melbourne's prettiest operational pub. Occupying a slithered corner between Princes and Raglan Streets, it is surrounded by some of the town's finest Victorian houses. On a sunny afternoon, the outside seating is really rather inviting for anyone getting off the tram at North Port (as, it has to be said, is the happy hour).
The building is divided into a large semi-formal steakhouse restaurant and a smaller bar with some low-key betting facilities. The bar is what I would describe as a 'proper' old man's bar filled with down to earth regulars.
Built around 1876, the Railway Club has a bit of a dark history. According to Pat Grainger's excellent book Chartered Scoundrels, one fireplace in this hotel now blocks the doorway into a room in which someone was murdered!

Beers on tap: Cascade Light, Carlton, Pure Blonde, Stella Artois, Fat Yak
Wine range: $7 - $8.50 a glass
Parma: $25 (not tested)
Gastro: No, pricey but not poncey
Tradie vs Yuppy: Definitely not yuppy
