Bay Street Rose

As Melbourne pubs go, The Rose is very unusual in occupying a mid-terraced, rather than corner, plot. I don't know whether it's the tattered rag that flies from its flagpole, the bargain-basement outdoor seating, or the cold rectangular facade, but the exterior of this pub doesn't do it the slightest justice.
This, it would hard to be argue for the owners, is a good thing. For anyone brave enough to venture inside it's a great thing because it makes the contrast with inside all the greater. A sweeping horseshoe bar, subdued lighting, one wall of film posters, one wall of black boards and a variety of places to sit, all make for a chilled atmosphere. The range of beers, though not large, is commendably varied ... although unfortunately the house wines offered by the glass leave something to be desired.
The Rose was originally called the Rose and Crown Hotel and was mentioned in The Argus newspaper back in 1884, although the current façade is clearly 20th century. It's also had a brief stint as the, rather harder to pronounce, Geluyckens Belgian Restaurant.

Beers on tap: Carlton Draught, Yacky Pure Blonde, Little Creatures Pale, Coopers Pale, Bearings Draught
Wine range: $7-$10 a glass
Parma: No
Gastro: No
Tradie vs Yuppy: Occupies the middle ground very nicely
Live Music: Occasional
